Inverted Chocolate and Vanilla Cupcakes:
These cupcakes can be quite tedious,
but they are always a hit whenever I make them. These are chocolate cupcakes
with a vanilla frosting and a chocolate topper and a vanilla cupcake with
chocolate frosting and a vanilla topper. I find that most people like the
mixture of the two flavors, but you could always customize and make whatever
combination best suits you and your guests. Please do not be alarmed by the
number of steps in the recipe. It looks like a lot, but it does not take as
much time as one might think, and from my own experience I definitely think
that following all of the steps are well worth the results.
Ingredients needed for the chocolate cupcake:
2 teaspoons of baking powder
¼ teaspoon of baking soda
1 1/3 cups of all-purpose flour
¾ cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
A pinch of salt
3 tablespoons of softened butter
1 ½ cups of white sugar
2 eggs
1 cup milk
¾ teaspoon of vanilla extract
Step-by-step instructions for the chocolate cupcake:
1.
First you will need to preheat the oven to 350
degrees Fahrenheit.
2.
Line a muffin or cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
3.
Grab a bowl and sift the flour, baking powder,
cocoa, baking soda, and salt together.
4.
Set the bowl aside.
5.
Grab a different bowl and cream the butter and
sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy.
6.
Add the eggs (one at a time) to the butter
mixture. Make sure to beat the mixture well in between each egg.
7.
Stir in the vanilla.
8.
Grab the flour mixture and add alternately with
the milk to the butter mixture.
9.
Fill the cupcake liners until ¾ of the way full.
10.
Place the cupcake tin into the oven.
11.
Bake for 15-17 minutes.
12.
Remove from oven.
Ingredients for vanilla cupcakes:
¾ teaspoon of baking soda
A pinch of salt
1 ¼ cups of all-purpose flour
4 tablespoons of butter
1 cup of white sugar
2/3
cup of milk
2 eggs
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Step-by-step instructions for vanilla cupcakes:
1.
First you will need to preheat the oven to 350
degrees Fahrenheit.
2.
Line a cupcake pan with cupcake liners.
3.
Grab a bowl and combine the flours, the baking
soda, and the salt.
4.
Set the bowl aside.
5.
Grab a saucepan and heat the butter and milk
over a low to medium heat until the butter is fully melted.
6.
Beat together the sugar, egg yolk, eggs, and
vanilla extract until it is thickened.
7.
Slowly beat in the flour mixture until the two
mixtures are just combined.
8.
Slowly pour the hot milk and butter mixture and
beat until just combined.
9.
Fill the cupcake liners until ¾ of the way full.
10.
Place the cupcake tin into the oven.
11.
Bake cupcakes 18-20 minutes.
12.
Remove from oven.
Ingredients for chocolate frosting recipe:
1 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder
5 cups of confectioner’s powder sugar
1 ½ cups of softened butter
½ cup of milk
½ teaspoon of espresso powder
2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
Step-by-step instructions for chocolate frosting:
1.
Place the cocoa into a large bowl, and remove
any of the clumps by whisking the powder
2.
Cream together the butter and cocoa until just
combined.
3.
Slowly add the sugar and the milk to the cocoa
mixture. Do this by adding 1 cup of sugar with about one tablespoon of milk at
a time. Repeat this step until all of
the sugar and milk has been added. Once all added, mix on high speed for 2-3
minutes.
4.
Add the espresso powder and the vanilla extract
to the mixture until it is well combined.
Ingredients for the vanilla frosting recipe:
3 cups of powder sugar
1 ½ teaspoons of vanilla extract
2 teaspoons of milk
1/3 cup of softened butter
Step-by-step instructions for vanilla frosting:
1.
Grab a bowl and cream together the butter and
the powdered sugar.
2.
Add the vanilla and beat the mixture for 2
minutes.
3.
Add one tablespoon of milk and mix until well
combined.
4.
Slowly add the other tablespoon of milk until
the mixture is smooth. If the frosting happens to be thick, beat in some more
milk until the frosting becomes smooth.
Once you have made both the chocolate and vanilla
cupcakes and both the chocolate and vanilla frosting, you may being preparing
and putting together the final product. Grab the set of chocolate cupcakes and
the set of vanilla frosting. Frost each cupcake with a generous amount of
frosting. Now repeat the steps, but with the vanilla cupcake and the chocolate
frosting.
Another fun thing to do with these cupcakes is to add
toppers.
Ingredients needed for cupcake toppers:
Chocolate candy melts
Vanilla candy melts
Piping bag with a small tip (2)
Wax paper
Step-by-step instructions for cupcake toppers:
1.
Melt the chocolate candy melts in the microwave
until they are completely melted.
2.
Pour the melt into the plastic piping bag.
3.
Here is where you can be as creative as you
want. If the cupcakes are for a specific occasion, you could pipe out a word.
You could pipe out a spiral design for a general get together. You can do
whatever type of design that your heart desires. Once you have piped out one
design, continue this process until you have enough designs to go on top of all
of your chocolate cupcakes with the vanilla frosting.
4.
Repeat steps 1-3 but use the vanilla candy
melts. Place the vanilla toppers on top of the vanilla cupcakes with the
chocolate frosting.
